Giants Draft Top Tight End Amid Darren Waller Retirement Rumors

Instead of waiting for Darren Waller to announce if he’ll play next season, the New York Giants are being proactive and adding depth to their tight end room.

The Giants used the No. 107 pick in this year’s NFL Draft on Penn State tight end Theo Johnson this Saturday.

Johnson, a 6-foot-6 pass catcher from Canada, had 34 receptions for 341 yards and seven touchdowns last season. It was his most productive year at Penn State.

With Johnson on board for the 2024 season, the Giants should feel a little bit better about their depth chart. He’ll join a group that currently features Daniel Bellinger and Jack Stoll.

As for Waller, he claims he’ll make a final decision very soon. It’s very possible he retires considering the G-Men are rebuilding.

“I haven’t [set a deadline], but I know at the end of the day, you know, there’s going to be no considering in reevaluating past when people report to camp, but I feel like I am getting an inch closer to a decision,” Waller said, via NJ.com.

The Giants traded a compensatory third-round pick for Waller in 2023. Last season, the Pro Bowler had 52 catches for 552 yards and a touchdown.

On paper, the Giants would have a better offense with Waller back. They’re not going to hold their breath, though.
