Penn State star defender Abdul Carter faces a misdemeanor assault charge after an alleged confrontation last month.

Carter is accused of assaulting a tow truck driver on March 16.

According to police, Carter confronted the driver attempting to tow his vehicle. Carter allegedly “questioned the victim’s authority,” believing his car was being stolen, and refused to provide his name for paperwork.

Police said they have surveillance video of Carter pulling the driver out of the truck and throwing him to the ground.

“Video showed Carter allowing the driver to get up but held him back again when the man tried to return to the truck, police wrote,” State College’s Geoff Rushton reported. “Carter released the man when a witness said she called 911, but continued to block the driver’s side door, according to the affidavit.”

The victim was hospitalized and treated for a rib fracture.

Carter was charged with simple assault and harassment on Wednesday. Per Nittany Central’s David Malandra Jr., Penn State released a statement that evening.

“We are aware of the charges against Abdul Carter,” the statement said. “These alleged actions do not reflect the values and standards of our program and will be addressed. We will not comment any further as this is an ongoing legal matter.”

Carter has tallied 11 sacks and three forced fumbles in two seasons at Penn State. The 20-year-old has been planning to move from linebacker to defensive end this offseason.
