The former Panther will be the 10th player to represent Pitt in the Canton.

When talking about the greatest cornerbacks to ever play the game, the Pittsburgh Panthers will have some representation. Darrelle Revis was officially inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame class of 2023 during the NFL Honors.

Revis will be the 10th Panther to have himself enshrined in Canton and the first since Jimbo Covert in 2020. This gives Pitt the fourth most hall-of-fame players trailing only USC, Michigan, and Notre Dame.

“On behalf of the University of Pittsburgh, I want to congratulate Darrelle Revis on his incredibly deserved election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame,” Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi said. “When you say ‘shutdown corner,’ you immediately think of Darrelle. I don’t think anyone played the position better than him. He simply dominated opposing wide receivers, whether it was at Aliquippa, Pitt or in the National Football League.”

Revis starred at the University of Pittsburgh from 2004-06 where he was a two-time All-Big East first-team selection. The dual-threat player scored five touchdowns at Pitt—three on interceptions and two via punt returns. Perhaps his most memorable collegiate play was a dazzling 73-yard punt return TD against West Virginia that was selected ESPN’s 2006 “College Football Play of the Year.”

From there Revis was selected in the first round of the NFL draft going 14th overall to the New York Jets. Revis quickly became a shutdown corner getting dubbed “Revis Island” for his ability to erase the best opposing wide receiver weekly. Revis was named to the all-rookie team in 2007 and never looked back.

“Tonight, Darrelle earned the game’s highest honor — first-ballot election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame,” Jets Chairman Robert Wood Johnson said in a statement. “Early in his career, we witnessed the strength of character, dedication to the game and special football acumen that made him into an elite competitor. We look forward to seeing his bust enshrined forever with the other titans of the game in Canton, Ohio.”

Over 11 NFL seasons, the lockdown corner was a seven-time Pro Bowler and four-time first-team All-Pro. He was selected to the NFL 2010s All-Decade Team. Revis finished with 29 interceptions in his career taking three back to the house for touchdowns even with opposing quarterbacks often making the business decision to avoid throwing his direction.

In 2014 Revis was able to put the stamp on his first ballot hall of fame ticket. En route to his fourth All-Pro season, Revis put opposing receivers on his island and was a key player in helping the New England Patriots win the Super Bowl.

Revis will receive his formal Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrinement in Canton on Saturday, August 5th.
