Pitt athletics hops into a busy spring break schedule

March 5, 2025 by The Pitt News

Even though school is out for spring break, Pitt athletics remains in full swing. Winter sports are preparing for their final stretch of regular season games while spring sports prepare for regular season play.

Softball

Pitt softball (8-7,0-0 ACC) heads to Long Beach, California, to kick off spring break and compete in the Louisville Slugger Invitational. The tournament starts Friday, Feb. 28 with a double-header against Cal Poly at noon followed by Nebraska-Omaha at 2:30 p.m.

On Saturday, Pitt faces Utah Tech and Loyola Marymount in evening games. To round out the first weekend of the break, Pitt faces Long Beach State at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday. Softball returns to the diamond the following weekend in Chapel Hill for a three-game series against conference foe North Carolina.

Baseball

Baseball (5-2, 0-0 ACC) starts spring break with a three-game series against UNC Greensboro in North Carolina. The Panthers have one match following the series on Tuesday, March 4 against UNC Asheville. After a short break, Pitt rounds out spring break in another three-game series against East Tennessee State in Johnson City. The Panthers return to Charles L. Cost Field March 12 against Youngstown State.

Gymnastics

Pitt gymnastics (3-6, ACC 0-6) has two meets over the break. The first is against Kent State on Friday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. and streams on ESPN+. The second is against West Virginia at the Fitzgerald Field House. Pitt will host the Backyard Brawl this year. West Virginia holds a 13-7-8 all-time record against Pitt and lost their most recent meet against the Panthers in 2024. The Panthers look to add another tick to the win column against the Mountaineers March 9 at 2 p.m.

Track and Field ACC Championships

25 athletes will represent Pitt track and field at the 2025 ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships in Louisville. The competition starts on Saturday, March 1 at 11 a.m. Junior Luke Simpson earned the third-fastest mile time in program history at 4:02.52 at the previous meet.

Simpson will compete in the mile as well as the 3,000-meter run in the championship meet this weekend. Last time out, graduate student Sadie Carey-Tharp finished the 5,000-meter race with her personal best and currently holds the fourth fastest time in program history. Carey-Tharp will compete in the 5,000-meter run in the championship meet as well.

Swim and Dive

After returning from Greensboro in the ACC Championship meet, the Panthers travel down to Athens this weekend in the annual Bulldog Invitational Last Chance Meet. The weekend event starts at 10 a.m. each day with preliminaries and finals at 5 p.m.

With many matchups on deck for the Panthers, Pitt athletics should keep very busy during the break and hopefully stack up wins before students return to Oakland.
