Kapanen Rewarded With New Contract in Edmonton
Kapanen’s new contract is one-year worth $1.3 million. Moreover, Kapanen re-signed with the St. Louis Blues last summer, but was placed on waivers and claimed by the Edmonton Oilers. In 67 games between the Blues and Oilers, Kapanen scored six goals and recorded eight assists for a total of 14 points. In the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Kapanen played in 12 games for the Oilers, scoring three goals. Furthermore, Kapanen score the series-winning goal in overtime of the Oilers second-round series.
Role With the Oilers
With the Oilers, Kapanen played on the second and third line. That is likely where Kapanen will play for the foreseeable future.
Kapanen Hopes to Rediscover Offence
Kapanen’s first full-time season in the NHL was a successful one. In 78 games, Kapanen scored 20 goals. The next four seasons, Kapanen scored no less than 11 goals, including a 15-goal season.
Since then, the former first-round pick has struggled to rediscover his offence. These offensive struggles are the reason Kapanen has been waived twice in his career.
If Kapanen can rediscover that scoring touch, it will mean great things for the Oilers. At 28-years old, there is still time for him to find that offensive groove again. It seems general manager Stan Bowman and staff were happy with what they saw. This can probably be emphasized for his playoff contributions.
Milestone Watch
Kapanen will enter the 2025-26 season on milestone watch. Kapanen is just ten goals away from 100 for his career. The native from Finland has not scored 10+ goals since the 2022-23 season. However, perhaps Kapanen can end that trend this season.
Career Totals
Kapanen has played in 10 NHL seasons. In 527 games played, Kapanen has scored 90 goals and added 132 assists for a total of 222 points. His best season came in 2018-19, where he scored 20 goals and recorded 44 points in 78 games.
