An ownership group spearheaded by Mario Lemieux has expressed an interest in reacquiring the Penguins organization, according to a new report.
According to The Athletic’s Josh Yohe, Lemieux headlines an ownership group that “remains ‘very interested’ in buying the Pittsburgh Penguins.”

Lemieux and Ron Burkle sold the Penguins in 2021 to the Fenway Sports Group for just shy of $1 billion.
Pierre LeBrun reported last month that Lemieux and Burkle, along with former Penguins CEO David Morehouse, were investigating the possibility of trying to buy the team back from FSG.
Yohe reported Monday that the Lemieux group “is continuing to consider its financial options and pondering avenues that could see it take control of the Penguins again at some point.”
“Maybe it will happen, maybe it won’t,” Yohe reported from a source.
105.9 The X radio host and Tribune-Review columnist Mark Madden added Monday that “Mario and Burkle def. wanna buy back Pens,” clarifying that they want a controlling interest in the team.

The Penguins were value was placed at $1.75 billion in the latest Forbes rankings in fall 2024 in the midst of franchise values exploding across the NHL.
It was reported earlier in the year that FSG was looking to sell a minority stake in team.
