Pens Points will get you ready for puck drop later this evening as the Penguins go for five straight.

Winners of four straight, the Pittsburgh Penguins will look to make it five-in-a-row for the first time this season when they host the New York Islanders at PPG Paints Arena later this evening. The Penguins have not won five straight hockey games since November 2023. Tonight will also mark the Penguins 70th game of season, making them the first team to hit that number.

Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 PM and will be broadcast on Sportsnet Pittsburgh.

Pens Points…

What a week it was for new guys Connor Dewar, Conor Timmins, and Vladislav Kolyachonok all who made significant impacts during this Penguins winning streak. This is especially important for Dewar and Timmins who are playing for new contracts. [Pensburgh]

While factoring in for the small sample size since being acquired, it’s impossible to ignore what Conor Timmins has done so far. Not only does he have three points in four games, opponents have been struggling to generate offense with him on the ice. [Pensburgh]

No team will ever admit to outright tanking to improve draft positioning but it’s hard to hide when you’re really trying. In the past, tanking has helped the Penguins bring in some pretty big names, but it’s far from a full proof strategy. [The Athletic $$]

What happens with Tristan Jarry this offseason remains to be seen, but right now he’s the best goalie at the Penguins disposal. Until his play falls off, you have to keep running him out there if winning is the goal. [The Hockey Writers]

Philip Tomasino, acquired for almost nothing earlier in the season, has been one of the most pleasant surprises for the Penguins. While he’s been a consistent offensive contributor, the improvement in his overall game has been his main focus. [Trib Live]

NHL News and Notes…

For the sixth straight season, the San Jose Sharks will miss the postseason, becoming the first team eliminated from playoff contention this season. Despite missing out once again, the Sharks are loaded with young talent and should be trending upwards. [NHL]

Don’t look now, but the Ottawa Senators are close to making it a four team race in the Atlantic division. Winners of six straight and with points in eight of ten, the young Sens are not interested with just grabbing a wild card spot. [Sportsnet]
