Reaction to Pittsburgh’s second pick of the night

The Penguins traded back from the 12th overall pick and ended up getting Bill Zonnon at 22nd overall as part of that deal. Here’s some detail on one of the newest Penguin prospects.

Get to Know Your New Prospect: Bill Zonnon! #LetsGoPens

The Penguins select Bill Zonnon at 22nd overall. He’s a high-motor, versatile forward with size, skill, and the tools to impact the game in all three zones.

Penguins draft Bill Zonnon at 22. I rated him 13th.
Another fantastic pick for Zonnon. Sure he’s not the best skater, but I love this kid to bits. Such a hard worker, such a workhorse. One of the coolest off-ice players in the draft. Love him. Pens are eating tonight. #LetsGoPens pic.twitter.com/nfaq3jMfOy

The expanded text from the report:

The Pittsburgh Penguins have selected Bill Zonnon at 22nd overall. I ranked him #24.

Zonnon is a hard working forward who seems destined for a bottom six role at the worst. pic.twitter.com/qYlY7m2Ik0

#LetsGoPens select Bill Zonnon 22nd. I ranked him 29th.

You hear that Zonnon was top-5 in the Q in assists this year – that sounds insane, until you realize the Q is a terrible league, and it’s just good. But at his size, he’s stil a solid pick here. pic.twitter.com/6G0rmwhBE4

Bill Zonnon at 22nd overall.

Typical late 1st pick. Fine value there.

Mackie Samoskevich of Florida is a good comp of a player taken at a similar spot that is a near mirror profile. pic.twitter.com/ePb8xp2X81

Bill Zonnon goes to @penguins at #22.

Dependable defensive center with strong compete level – exactly the type of player Pittsburgh values. Limited offense but clear NHL path through his two-way game. #2025NHLDraft #NHLDraft pic.twitter.com/HAKwUVJxtc

22. Pittsburgh Penguins take Bill Zonnon.

I like Zonnon. He’s very energetic, a tremendous playmaker and is looking more comfortable as a shooter, too. He’s physical, smart and is an excellent passer who can do some dangerous things with the puck.

When he has the puck, he…

You never know about the combine and the pull-up drill – Sam Bennett famously couldn’t even do one (and he turned out to be a pretty powerful force on the ice). But Zonnon put up 16, the most at the 2025 combine. But you can see his power and long, lean frame here. At 6’2” and about 190 pounds, Zonnon is bound to fill out more as he goes from a teenager into a pro hockey player.

Bill Zonnon is a versatile playmaker who can play wing and center, move the puck perfectly, and work hard without that one. He collected 65.6% of his points via assists through 3 seasons pic.twitter.com/NdOh8rEu9u

Overall, Zonnon is a developmental case for the Penguins. He has shown some playmaking chops and has a tremendous drive on the ice. He’s a “high floor, low ceiling” type at first blush, but the Penguins will undoubtedly be counting on him to exceed some expectations in terms of where he might get to as a hard-working player. He has a great size profile and has shown growth switching from wing to center. Zonnon could be compared to a Mackie Samoskevich or Adam Henrique style of dependable player with 40-50 point upside as a capable mid-line player. Zonnon will need to work and develop his skating a bit more as he progresses through his career but has the talent, size and motor to stand out as a first round caliber prospect.
