The Pittsburgh Pirates are slated to take one of the best high school arms in the 2025 MLB Draft.
The Pittsburgh Pirates have the No. 6 overall pick in this year’s MLB Draft, and while the event doesn’t take place until July, people are already talking about who the Buccos will take.
The Athletic insider Keith Law has the Pirates taking Corona High School pitcher Seth Hernandez from Corona, California.
Pittsburgh has appeared to be heavy on high schoolers this spring, at least relative to the teams ahead of them, including Hernandez and his teammate Billy Carlson, as well as [Eli] Willits. They also took a high-risk, high-reward prospect in the first round last year in Konnor Griffin, which may mean they’re more inclined to take on the risk of a high school arm.
The players chosen ahead of Hernandez were high school shortstop Ethan Holliday, Tennessee pitcher Liam Doyle, Oregon State shortstop Aiva Arquette, Florida State pitcher Jamie Arnold and Oklahoma pitcher Kyson Witherspoon.
Hernandez has the ideal pitcher frame at 6-4, but he will likely have to put on some muscle as he makes his way through the minors as he weighs only 190 pounds.
Considering how the Pirates went in last year’s draft with Griffin, the Buccos may want to look at taking a high school arm to give them a long-term prospect to work with through the minor leagues.
