The Pittsburgh Pirates have optioned infielder Jared Triolo to Triple-A Indianapolis and selected the contract of pitcher Yohan Ramírez. To make room for Ramírez on the 40-man roster, outfielder/first baseman Matt Gorski was designated for assignment. The moves were announced on the Pirates Transactions page. Ramírez will join the team for Friday night’s game in Minnesota against the Twins.

Pirates Option Jared Triolo to Triple-A
It’s not every day that you read that a Gold Glove Award recipient is sent down to minors, but you’re reading it now. It was a move that was long overdue. Triolo, a plus defender all over the infield, has struggled with the bat this season. He’s hitting just .158/.253/.266, 3 HR, and 10 RBI, “good” for a weak 46 OPS+. Besides being the Pirates’ primary backup on the left side of the infield, Triolo has served as the right-handed-hitting half of a first base platoon with Spencer Horwitz.
Unless another move is in the works, this means that the Pirates’ brain trust is ready to see what Horwitz can do against left-handed pitching. Horwitz is 3-for-22 against left-handed pitching so far this year. It also means that Jack Suwinski’s spot on the active roster is safe for now. Suwinski was recalled on Tuesday. He may be getting more than a cursory look this time around.
We have selected the contract of RHP Yohan Ramírez from Triple-A Indianapolis, and optioned INF Jared Triolo to Triple-A Indianapolis on Thursday to make room on the 26-man active roster.

Pirates Add Yohan Ramírez
The well-traveled Ramírez is a modern-day version of Harry “Suitcase” Simpson. In 10 seasons in professional baseball, he’s played in 20 cities (22 if one counts winter ball), including stints with the Pirates in 2022 and 2023. The 30-year-old right-hander rejoined the Pirates as a minor league free agent after the 2024 season. At Indy this year, he was 2-1 with a 3.19 ERA, 1.258 WHIP, and 41 strikeouts in 31 innings. Yet he never got the call to join the big club, and on July 4, he exercised a contractual option to become a free agent. The Pirates re-signed him to a new deal two days later. Whether that deal came with a promise of a major-league promotion or whether that was intended all along is unknown.
Matt Gorski Designated for Assignment
Gorski, 27, had a nice spring training for the Pirates, when he went 9-for-25 and led the team with four home runs and 13 RBI. However, that wasn’t enough for him to break camp with the club, but it was enough to make him a fan favorite. The fans got their wish when he was brought up on April 24 to make his major league debut. In 15 games, he was 8-for-41 with two home runs and four RBI before being returned to Indianapolis. There, he hit .278/.318/.519, 4 HR, and 15 RBI, but with a 26.1 percent strikeout rate, in 22 games before landing on Indy’s injured list. He hasn’t played in a game since May 23. As an injured player, the Pirates have a week to trade or release him. Maybe he’ll have better luck in his next organization.
