The Pittsburgh Pirates have recalled shortstop Liover Peguero from Triple-A Indianapolis to bring the active roster to 26 men. The team announced the news on its Transactions page. They had a vacant roster spot after trading Adam Frazier to the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday. Peguero joins the Pirates in time for Friday’s rain-threatened game against the Chicago White Sox at PNC Park.

Pirates Recall Liover Peguero from Triple-A
Although the Pirates acquired him way back in 2020 in Ben Cherington’s first trade as Pirates general manager, Peguero is only 24 years old. The right-handed batter got a good look in 2023 and hit .237/.280/.374, 7 HR, and 26 RBI in 59 games. The Pirates never gave him much of a chance after that, however. Up and down in 2024 and 2025, he appeared in just seven games during that stretch and was 4-for-19.

Peguero didn’t do much with the bat at Indy, either, this season, hitting .251/.312/.373, 5 HR, and 36 RBI in 72 games. He also stole eight bases in 11 tries. He’s considered a good defender, despite middling fielding stats at the major league level at shortstop and second base. Peguero will likely slide into Jared Triolo’s role as the primary backup infielder. As such, he may also see action at third base. It’s doubtful, however, that he’ll be given Triolo’s job as the right-handed-hitting first baseman.
Peguero may stick with the Pirates for a while in light of the inevitable trade of Isiah Kiner-Falefa and a possible deal of Ke’Bryan Hayes, depending upon whether another infielder or two come back to the Pirates in those deals. But it’s also possible that his window of opportunity may slam shut quickly if he doesn’t take advantage of it. Power-hitting shortstop Cam Devanney is waiting in the wings at Indy after being picked up in the Frazier deal. Triolo may return, too, if the bat gets hot in Triple-A. Despite Triolo’s offensive shortcomings, he’s a better defender than Peguero and is still higher up in the food chain in the Pirates’ eyes.
