Paul Skenes continues to pitch well. He lowered his ERA to 1.78 on the season in Friday’s game against the Chicago Cubs. He’s now just allowed five earned runs over his last 47 innings of pitching, however, he’s grabbed just a single win in that stretch.
There’s only been a single time in MLB history that a pitcher won the Cy Young Award with a losing record, and it was reliever Eric Gagne in 2003. It’s never happened with a starting pitcher.
So we asked this week, if Skenes continues to pitch this well but also not get the run support needed for victories, should he still win the Cy Young if he finishes with a losing record? Here are the results:
