The 2025 MLB Trade deadline was yesterday, and as expected, the Pirates were sellers. GM Ben Cherington made several moves, including trading hometown closer David Bednar and third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes.
Hayes was shipped to the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for 20-year-old shortstop Sammy Stafura and relief pitcher Taylor Rogers. Bednar was sent to New York Yankees for for catcher and number eight Yankees prospect Rafael Flores, catcher/first baseman Edgleen Perez who is another prospect, and outfielder Brian Sanchez. The Bucs also dealt lefty pitcher Caleb Ferguson to the Seattle Mariners for in exchange for 19-year-old right-handed pitching prospect Jeter Martinez.
The Pirates dropped some salary (big surprise) and received a few prospects with potential, but no top young guys. It wasn’t exactly a fire sale, but the Bucs certaianly didn’t get better at the deadline.
Anyway, it’s now your job to grade this thing. It’s Ben Cherington’s 2025 MLB Trade Deadline report card.
