The Cincinnati Bengals have been without star running back Joe Mixon since Week 6. He’s now officially set to miss a third straight game for the team.
Mixon has been dealing with a foot injury for weeks now, which is obviously troublesome for a running back who gets the workload that Mixon does. He was downgraded to doubtful on Friday, making today’s news less surprising.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Mixon will officially miss Sunday’s games against the undefeated Pittsburgh Steelers. The news puts even more of the onus on rookie quarterback Joe Burrow and his up and coming passing attack, as well as the struggling Bengals offensive line to keep him upright, without Mixon’s consistent rushing presence to keep them honest.
Giovani Bernard has been solid in Mixon’s absence. He has 143 yards and two touchdowns on 40 carries this year, largely during Mixon’s absence, and has actually been the bigger threat as a receiver out of the backfield, with 190 yards and two additional scores. Still, the Bengals would much rather have their bellcow available.

In six games this year, Mixon has 428 yards and three touchdowns on 119 carries. He hasn’t been the most efficient back, but the Bengals have been dedicated to getting him the ball when healthy.
As a team, Cincinnati is just 2-5-1 on the year, but they’ve shown some real fight in recent weeks. Since a blowout loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Oct. 11, the Bengals have a point differential of +4, with close losses to the Indianapolis Colts and Cleveland Browns before a breakthrough 31-20 win over the Tennessee Titans.
The Steelers are their biggest test yet, especially with a talent like Joe Mixon out. We’ll see how Joe Burrow and company answer the call for the Cincinnati Bengals.
Sunday’s game in Pittsburgh kicks off at 4:25 p.m. ET.
