The man who helped get Chase Claypool to the NFL isn’t surprised at all in the success he has seen with the Steelers.
When the Pittsburgh Steelers took Chase Claypool in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, there were a lot of fans who were on the fence about the prospect. He had the size and athleticism, but many felt he wasn’t at the same level as some of the other wide receivers who would be off the board before Claypool was selected.
After a very promising start to his professional career, many fans have jumped to the other side of the fence and are fully supporting Claypool, and ultimately the Steelers’ decision to draft him when they did this spring.
One person who isn’t shocked by Claypool’s success would be the man who recruited him out of Canada and watched him blossom for four years at Notre Dame. That would be none other than coach Brian Kelly. Kelly joined the Jim Rome Show recently and told Rome how proud they are of Claypool, and the player he has become.
“We are proud of the development of our players. Nobody knew who Chase Claypool was, and all the other guys have bigger resumes.” Kelly said. “He is a young man out of Canada who developed and, you know, we thought he was going to make an impact. He is a humble kid, and he has obviously made an impact early on. And he will continue to do that.”
Taking things a step further, Kelly stated what everyone else saw on Sunday at Heinz Field vs. the Philadelphia Eagles. How Claypool’s 6-feet 4-inch, 230 pound frame against a smaller defensive back is a bad matchup for the defense.
“He is a matchup nightmare.”
What truly makes him such a nightmare to defend? Other than his freakish size, speed and athleticism, is his ability to play almost any skill position on the offensive side of the ball. Kelly knew this well before Claypool was drafted, which meant he was not surprised by Claypool’s early success in the NFL.
“You can play him inside, you can play him outside, you can hand him off the football. He is well grounded and he is well prepared for the success he is going to get in the NFL.”
Kelly knows Claypool well, and he knows what he still is capable of, even at the NFL level. Is Claypool just scratching the surface of his potential? Or is he someone who would be labeled as a one-game wonder when his rookie season comes to a close?
No one knows the answers to this question, yet, but Claypool will certainly be on the Cleveland Browns’ radar coming off a 4 touchdown performance last Sunday. Stay tuned to BTSC for the latest news and notes surrounding the Steelers as they move into Week 6 of the 2020 regular season.
