Chiefs Latest Loss Could Lead to Possible Free Agent Signing

September 14, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

After their latest loss against the Philadelphia Eagles, the Kansas City Chiefs could look to upgrade their offense and sign a new wide receiver. Veteran Nelson Agholor is still a free agent, and it could be any day that a team could sign him to salvage the receiver unit. However, due to quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ poor performance despite a strong touchdown throw to Tyquan Thornton, they’re better off signing another receiver to help fend off the losses of Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy. These two will return at some point during the 2025 regular season, but the Chiefs are looking to win a game sooner rather than later as they’re 2-0.

Originally selected in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft, the former USC product began his career with the Philadelphia Eagles, and ever since he last played with the Baltimore Ravens, he hasn’t been able to find work. Agholor isn’t in his prime anymore, but he should have a ton in the tank, especially joining a team like the Chiefs, who are hungry for a win and are looking to run it back for a Super Bowl run. While he won’t put up the best performance out there on the field, he is better than not having depth and could arguably share the slot route with JuJu Smith-Schuster. However, like the Chiefs, teams in the league are always looking to improve their offense, so here are three other teams that could pursue him.

Other Possible Suitors

Los Angeles Chargers

The Los Angeles Chargers look like a contender, but they won’t get very far if they have the weapons they have now on their starting roster. Between Ladd McConkey and veteran Keenan Allen, these two wide receivers arguably will be more consistent than what they have in Quentin Johnston, KeAndre Lambert-Smith and Tre Harris. It’s no fault of Lambert-Smith or Harris since they’re still developing into capable weapons, but Johnston is one to watch as the Chargers hope he can stay consistent.

With that, they should roll the dice and see what Agholor could do in the slot as a WR4 alongside McConkey. It won’t be the prettiest offensive change for Justin Herbert, but it gives him another body in the aerial attack.

Pittsburgh Steelers

However, with the latest loss against the Seattle Seahawks, the Steelers are in dire need of a wide receiver. Even though they have Scotty Miller, Roman Wilson and Calvin Austin, none of them can truly turn into a solid WR2 that can replicate what DK Metcalf can do. While they haven’t found a true complement to him, it shouldn’t stop them from signing Agholor at least on a one-year deal.

Washington Commanders

Meanwhile, the Washington Commanders are in dire need of playmakers other than Terry McLaurin and Deebo Samuel. While they did lose the chance of signing Kendrick Bourne, this doesn’t mean they should give up on signing another viable veteran. Agholor isn’t going to get every opportunity on all possessions, but help Jaylin Lane and Luke McCaffrey.
