Jaguars Released $39 Million Weapon Could Find New Team In Coming Days

May 9, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

Gabe Davis Jaguars

The Jacksonville Jaguars released wide receiver Gabe Davis despite signing a three-year, $39 million contract just one year ago. A fourth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, the Central Florida product overcame his Day 3 draft capital to establish himself as a reliable part of the Buffalo Bills’ passing attack. After starting his career as a depth option, the wide receiver parlayed two seasons of starting-caliber play into a massive raise with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Unfortunately, success didn’t follow him to the Sunshine State, as he appeared in just 10 games while recording 20 receptions for 239 yards and two touchdowns. With Jacksonville hiring a new head coach and general manager, the team cut bait with a leftover player from the previous regime. Gabe Davis won’t receive another $39 million deal from his next team, but the following five organizations could bring him in and see what’s left in his tank.

Pittsburgh Steelers

George Pickens is now a Dallas Cowboy, which means the Pittsburgh Steelers could use another wide receiver. While the Steelers roster is not in good shape, head coach Mike Tomlin and the entire organization do not believe in rebuilding. Whether it’s Mason Rudolph, Aaron Rodgers, or Kirk Cousins, this team will try to compete for the playoffs in 2025, and Gabe Davis should help an anemic passing attack find some stability. D.K. Metcalf will be the top option, but Davis could start opposite him as another big-bodied receiver who can make plays down the field.

Baltimore Ravens

On a per-target basis, Gabe Davis was at his best when he was the third option in the Buffalo Bills passing attack. Now, the Baltimore Ravens could utilize a similar model if they sign him to the roster. Rashod Bateman and Pro Bowler Zay Flowers will lead the receiver room in targets, but Davis could be the third option. With tight end Mark Andrews a potential cap casualty, Lamar Jackson’s squad could use more reliable depth options to remain one of the league’s elite teams. If nothing else, he can provide some competition for the aging DeAndre Hopkins.

Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs allowed DeAndre Hopkins to walk in free agency following a disappointing half-season with the team. While he clearly lost a step, the Chiefs have yet to find a proper replacement for his role in the offense. Gabe Davis has a similar build and plays the game with the same physicality on the outside, so he’d be a natural replacement in the offense. Again, he won’t be the focal point of the passing attack, but he could help Kansas City hoist yet another Lombardi Trophy as Patrick Mahomes’ third or fourth option.

Buffalo Bills

Why not? Gabe Davis had his best seasons with the Buffalo Bills, so perhaps a reunion is in order. Khalil Shakir is a good possession receiver, and second-round pick Keon Coleman had his moments as a rookie, but this team needs more reliable options. Davis already has a rapport with quarterback Josh Allen, and head coach Sean McDermott knows exactly what he brings to the table.

Washington Commanders

The Washington Commanders are ahead of schedule in their rebuild. Head coach Dan Quinn and quarterback Jayden Daniels brought the team to the NFC Championship in Year 1, and the roster should be more talented in 2025. Gabe Davis can’t singlehandedly lead a passing attack, but he could provide reliable depth behind do-everything star Terry McLaurin and the shifty Deebo Samuel.
