ProFootball Hall of Fame Class of 2020: Bill Cowher

I have the great honor of profiling former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Bill Cowher.

You know, to me, the Steelers have always been that overall very consistent team. Year in and year out, you can always expect them to be in the mix. They’ve had some drama over the years, but have always been able to weather the storm and right the ship.

A lot of that is due to the consistency they’ve had at the head coach position, which we all know. They’ve only had 3 head coaches since 1969.

And one of those coaches, and maybe one of the best, is Coach Bill Cowher.  A former linebacker and special teams player for both the Cleveland Browns and Philadelphia Eagles, Cowher coached from 1992-2006. He lead the team to the playoffs ten times, won eight division titles and took the team to 2 Super Bowls.

His Steelers team was the 6th seed that year, and it was the first time in NFL history that a 6th seeded team won a Super Bowl, also making him the youngest coach (at the time) to reach the Super Bowl.

He was only the second coach in NFL history, behind Paul Brown, to reach the playoffs in each of his first six seasons as a head coach. Cowher had an overall career record of 161-99-1 with a remarkable winning percentage of .619.

Known as an intense coach, he would always have the back of his players and staunchly defended them in the media. Here’s an example of this:

Despite the Steelers starting 2-0 in 1998, the media heavily criticize Slash after a week 3 shutout loss in Miami. Cowher directly responds to their criticism. @KSlash10 pic.twitter.com/w9dkmUEwxV

Probably my most favorite part of all of the Hall of Fame experience has been watching when the person gets the “knock on the door” or in this case when they get notified in the studio.

Former @Steelers head coach Bill Cowher has been selected to the @ProFootballHOF Centennial Class of 2020!

His reaction is everything. ? #PFHOF20 (via @NFLonCBS) @CowherCBS pic.twitter.com/SBDvIFr0xR

Cowher is currently a studio analyst for The NFL Today.

Congratulations Coach Cowher on being inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame!
