The Pittsburgh Steelers were reportedly one of many NFL teams who put in a call for the newly minted free agent J.J. Watt.

The Pittsburgh Steelers already have two Watt brothers on their team. T.J. Watt is their prized defensive pupil, Derek Watt was the free agent acquisition in 2020 but could there be a third Watt joining the team?

Of course, by now, everyone has heard about J.J. Watt and the Houston Texans agreeing to part ways. When that news hit social media, you know what rumors started.

“Expect J.J. to join T.J. and Derek in Pittsburgh.”

The Steelers don’t have a lot of salary cap space, but after the retirements of Vance McDonald and Maurkice Pouncey, along with the rollover cap space from 2020, and their situation suddenly doesn’t look as dire.

Depending on the future of Ben Roethlisberger, the Steelers could still free up some salary cap space to make a maneuver or two in the free agent market. It is worth noting since Watt has been released, he can sign with a team whenever he wants.

According to Ed Werder of ESPN, there have been several teams who have already contact Watt, and the Steelers are one of them.

From NFL sources

NFL sources: Approximately a dozen teams have shown interest in JJ Watt since he became an immediate unrestricted free agent. Included among those teams are the #Steelers, #Browns, #Bills and #Titans.

For those wondering how fast a deal could move with Watt, consider how long it took for the news of his release and those aforementioned teams to put in the call. In other words, not very long.

However, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, Watt is going to at least take the weekend before really diving into any options. Fowler did take the time to mention Watt wanting to go to a team who is viewed as a contender.

With J.J. Watt officially waived today, he can begin receiving calls from NFL teams. I’m told Watt wants to take the weekend before digging into potential options. Going to a contender will be important.

Either way, it seems as though the Steelers are at least showing interest. Why? Because of course they would welcome the chance to have the entire Watt family within their organization. If the team can’t win it all, they at least will have the publicity of the Watt family behind them.

Either way, stay tuned to BTSC for the latest news and notes surrounding the black and gold as they prepare for the new league year, NFL Free Agency and the 2021 NFL Draft.
