New testing reportedly shows Thomas-Jones avoided a torn Achilles.

Steelers tight end D.J. Thomas-Jones may not be lost for the season after all.

The Athletic’s Mike DeFabo reported Monday that sources have told him the rookie did not suffer a torn Achilles at Sunday’s practice after testing by the team.

PennLive’s Nick Farabaugh, who had originally reported that Thomas-Jones was feared to have suffered a season-ending injury, later posted on X that a team source confirmed DeFabo’s report.

It appears the worst-case scenario is off the board for Thomas-Jones, but Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin still described his injury as “significant” on Sunday, following a practice where Thomas-Jones was carted off the field after injuring his left lower leg/ankle.

Thomas-Jones received the biggest non-quarterback signing bonus in Steelers history this spring. Listed as a fullback and playing some tight end at training camp, he’s expected to compete for a 53-man roster spot if he remains healthy.

The Steelers still haven’t made an official announcement regarding Thomas-Jones’ status.
