“Sign Me Or Not At All” – Top NFL Veteran Looking to Join Active Roster

September 3, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

Despite signing to the practice squad with the Pittsburgh Steelers after his first release, veteran Robert Woods is aiming to join an active roster. According to the breaking news, Woods reportedly requested his release this time around, which is no surprise, as he feels like he has some gas left in the tank. The Steelers have plenty of depth in their receiver core group between DK Metcalf, Roman Wilson, Calvin Austin and Scotty Miller. However, they’re lacking a true No. 2 option alongside Metcalf, and they didn’t view Woods in that category.

This shouldn’t be a shock for the 33-year-old, as no team probably wants to invest even in a one-year deal for the veteran. Originally selected in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft, the former USC product could have one more shot in the league, but he may have to wait a little longer for that to happen. There are still plenty of teams out there, just like wide receiver free agents, that are on the search, so Woods will need to wait until at least after the trade deadline is over this 2025 campaign. Woods isn’t the best available wide receiver on the market, so if he doesn’t sign with a team at least in the next two years, he might wind up retiring.

Either way, here are four teams that could take a chance for one more run.

Best Fits

Kansas City Chiefs

It will be a tough road for the Chiefs as the team will travel to Brazil to face the Los Angeles Chargers. Unfortunately, Patrick Mahomes’ offense will have to survive beyond that for another five games without wide receiver Rashee Rice due to a suspension for his car incident. This means Xavier Worthy and Marquise Brown will have large shoes to fill while that happens, and even though Nikko Remigio and Tyquan Thornton have shown some promise on the depth chart, they’re better off signing a reliable veteran. Woods won’t last more than one season with Kansas City, but it gives them some stability in the aerial attack.

Los Angeles Chargers

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Chargers have a strong running game between Najee Harris and first-round pick Omarion Hampton with an excellent offensive line, but the wide receiver group could use some work. 2024 draft pick Ladd McConkey will probably outperform all of the other weapons like Quentin Johnston, Tre Harris and KeAndre Lambert-Smith. After failing to get DK Metcalf this offseason, the Chargers should at least get another body in the air attack like Woods, since he has the Super Bowl experience to turn this offensive pass attack from average to good.

New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints brought in two promising weapons in Trey Palmer off waivers and traded for DeVaughn Vele. This means Brandin Cooks could find himself in danger of a cut. They should either keep him, or if they decide to release him, they should target Woods on a friendly deal to boost the corps behind Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed.

Dallas Cowboys

After the shocking Micah Parsons trade, the Dallas Cowboys need any type of addition to their roster that can bring back that spark. Woods joining the team would be far from that, but when you are without Jonathan Mingo for half the season, the Cowboys should be in the market for a wideout. CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens, Jalen Tolbert and Robert Woods joining apart of that group should put Dallas in the sweet spot of having a complete offensive roster.
