The Steelers selected Washington OT Troy Fautanu with their first-round selection at No. 20 after much pre-draft speculation about trading up or down. Five position versatility is mentioned in his draft profiles. NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah reported that one team felt Fautanu was the top center prospect in the draft.
“I know one team feels like he could be the best center in the draft,” Jeremiah said. “So, he’s a legit five-position guy.”

Leading up to the pick, there was skepticism from the commenters at Behind the Steel Curtain as to how it should be used.
with our luck they’ll draft Barton and he’ll end up at backup punter with Fields moving to TE because Tomlin likes their “versatility” and varsity factor — The Gif Sgt
Not all commenters had their dreams come true when Heyward announced the pick.
Another Artie Burns/Terrell Edmunds 1st round pick. Oh good — sak144
Others were absolutely thrilled to see Fautanu join the ranks.
Troy Fautanu is a beast. Athleticism for days and plays the game physically. Will get up on guys and move them in a hurry because of his strength and physicality. MASSIVE upgrade at tackle that we desperately needed. — Sebastian54
The last time the Steelers drafted a player named Troy with a four-syllable last name, it worked out pretty well. — AK43
YES YES YES smart choice by Khan and Co. nothing against Barton
Fautanu has some of the best movement skills in this draft — Pittsblitz56

Unbelievable pick
I thought he was a fringe top 12 pick… wow— Austin Burke (@theBurk3nator) April 26, 2024
Troy Fautanu is one of the freakiest OL athletes I’ve ever scouted. Ridiculously physical and strong. Some unorthodox technique, but he’s so ridiculously talented he can play that way and still dominate.
Great pick.

Steeler fans everywhere should unite and raise a glass (or a can of Iron City Beer) and toast the young man on the first steps to what will hopefully be a Hall of Fame career.
Here’s to you, Troy Fautanu! May your arms get sore from hoisting several Lombadris!
Congratulations and welcome to the Burgh!
