Will the Steelers seriously do this?
The biggest question about the Pittsburgh Steelers after the NFL Draft surrounds the quarterback position and what the Steelers will do with Russell Wilson and Justin Fields.
Mike Tomlin has reiterated that Wilson ins in “pole position” but that Fields will be given the opportunity to compete. But should Wilson keep the job going into the regular season, it’s hard to imagine that the Steelers wouldn’t utilize Fields in some way, shape, or form.
Well, according to Jaylen Warren, one idea is that Fields could return kicks.
Speaking on Cam Heyward’s podcast “Not Just Football,” Warren said that special teams coordinator Danny Smith would like to see Fields return kicks to see if there is something there.
“I would think it’s pretty cool,” Warren said. “As soon as you touch the ball that’s when everything starts to happen. Our special teams coordinator was talking about Justin Fields being back there. We looked at him like ‘Justin Fields will be back there?’ I think it’s cool.”
Don’t worry, we’re all thinking the same thing- “No.”
This feels like nothing more than a goofy idea to bring up on a podcast in May just to have a laugh. The Steelers utilizing a guy they hope could end up being their potential franchise quarterback on kickoff return makes no sense.
