Steelers named most logical landing spot for TE Jonnu Smith

This situation is likely to be resolved sooner rather than later

The Steelers have likely been looking for a new weapon, and one name they’ve been linked to is Miami Dolphins tight end Jonnu Smith.

Smith is in the final year of his contract and is seeking a new deal before the start of the season. His agent, the ostentatious Drew Rosenhaus, stated on Sunday that “nothing has been resolved yet,” concerning his client, and that talks are “still fluid.”

There has been a seesaw regarding reports, as ESPN’s Adam Schefter initially reported interest, and recently confirmed the talks are still alive.

Back in it: the Steelers renewed conversations today with Dolphins TE Jonnu Smith, who is seeking a new contract. The trade between the Steelers and Dolphins is still alive, per source.

Fans were initially thrown off by the reports, given that Pittsburgh recently extended TE Pat Freiermuth, and have high aspirations for third-year TE Darnell Washington.

But there are dots to connect.

CBS Sportswriter Ryan Sullivan mentions the ties between Jonnu Smith and Steelers OC Arthur Smith. Smith coached the versatile weapon in both Tennessee and Atlanta.

“Clearly, there is an affinity for the player on the part of Smith, and he would give the Steelers another pass-catching weapon,” Sullivan says. “While Pittsburgh traded for DK Metcalf earlier this offseason, they also dealt away George Pickens to the Cowboys. With Aaron Rodgers now in town, they’ll likely need another outlet in the passing attack.”

Smith is coming off a career year in which he caught 88 passes for 844 yards and 8 TDs. Could he be the missing link on offense?
