Splash plays. You hear it all the time from Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin. Minimizing splash plays with the defense and maximizing them on offense is a huge part of Tomlin’s philosophy for success.

The defense has it covered. Not only does the Steelers defense do a great job not giving up huge plays, but they also come up with plenty of their own. But the Steelers offense in 2020 was among the worst in the league at generating big plays.

Pittsburgh’s passing offense averaged 6.3 yards per attempt, second-worst in the NFL. It’s also 2.6 yards per attempt behind the Houston Texans who led the league.

The rushing offense was no better. Pittsburgh only rushed for 3.6 yards per carry, the worst in the NFL. This is compared to the Baltimore Ravens who rushed for 5.5 yards per carry. And in runs of 20 yards or more, the league lead was 31 and the Steelers had just 10.

But the 2021 NFL draft can fix this. And we don’t just mean by improving the offensive line. It’s a given this group must play better for any of those stats to improve.

But in terms of the skill players, the draft can bring hope. And speed. There are several players in this draft at running back and wide receiver who are outside of the top prospects with elite track speed.

Here are just a few names to keep in mind for the Steelers:

RB Jermar Jefferson, Oregon State

RB Pooka Williams, Kansas

RB Chuba Hubbard, Oklahoma State

WR Tamorrion Terry, Florida State

WR Tutu Atwell, Louisville

WR D’Wayne Eskridge, Western Michigan
