It was previously believed this is going to be Ben Roethlisberger‘s final season in the NFL. Steelers owner Art Rooney isn’t closing the door on Roethlisberger potentially returning in 2022 just yet, though.
Roethlisberger’s contract is up following the 2021-22 season. The Steelers are giving him one last ride with hopes he can have a successful final season. It’s too soon to say whether or not this will actually be his last year in Pittsburgh.
Believe it or not, Rooney isn’t ruling out Big Ben returning to the Steelers ahead of the 2022-23 season.
“It’s not written in stone that this is his last year,” Rooney told reporters on Tuesday, via ESPN.com.

This is certainly interesting. It sounds like Art Rooney would be willing to bring Ben Roethlisberger back to Pittsburgh if he plays well this upcoming season.
With that being said, Rooney understands the 2021-22 season “could be Ben’s last year.”
“We’re aware this could be Ben’s last year,” Rooney continued. “We hope it’s a great one. That’s as far as we can go with it right now. Obviously, if this is his last year, then next year we’ll be making decisions on a quarterback, and we’ll address it as the time comes up.”
It’s too early to make any predictions on Ben Roethlisberger’s future. He could dominate for the Steelers or he could lose his starting gig midway through the regular season. Only time will tell.
The bottom line is if Roethlisberger has a breakout year, the Steelers will think twice before showing him the exit early in 2022.
