One of Pittsburgh Steelers fans favorite things over the years has been Mike Tomlin‘s calls with drafted players. He used to start off the calls with his signature, “Are you healthy?” but he’s seemed to veer from that.
The Steelers shared two draft calls, one with third-round wide receiver Roman Wilson and the other with linebacker Payton Wilson (no relation).
“This is pretty good, isn’t it?” Tomlin asked. “I just love the process… it’s not a lightning strike, man. You’re our type of guy.”
And that’s no lie.
With Wilson’s speed, agility and love for hitting, he’ll instantly contribute to special teams. Whether he starts or not depends on the health and condition of Cole Holcomb, who suffered a devasting knee injury early last season. He certainly projects as a rotational player with Elandon Roberts and free-agent pickup Patrick Queen. His addition certainly doesn’t bode well for 2022 seventh-round pick Mark Robinson.
Wilson, 24, was a standout at the NFL Scouting Combine, registering a 4.43 40-yard dash and displaying fluidity in positional drills.
Wilson’s Combine earned a total score of 82 from Next Gen Stats (86, athleticism; 83, production), ranking first among linebackers.
